This book gives a broad overview of many types, origins, and uses of symbols. Is worth reviewing, but will not make one an expert.

Summary: "Lots of information"
Lots of information, there of course could always be more. There are aspects to lots of the different symbols presented that could be expanded upon. For a "short" book on the subject, it does a great job of giving an overview of many many different symbols, religions, mytholgies, and histories.

Summary: "Beautiful edition"
This is a beautifully produced edition. It looks like each page has been hand crafted. It is well written and comprehensive, and more than amply illustrated. One might wish for a little more depth on each of the topics, but otherwise this is an excellent book for a beginner who is interested in the general topic.

Summary: "A very helpful book."
This inexpensive book describes some of the oldest symbols and archetypes the human psyche has been influenced by for thousands of years. It is a great help for the visual artist and a stimulus to anyone's imagination. The archival illustrations are beautiful for the most part , and while this volume does'nt contain everything , it is very rich in contente , and offers a lifetime worth of thematic approach to visual studies. Thanks for this great compilation.

Summary: "Mediocre at best"
On the positive side: The book is full of color illustrations, ranging from the banal to fairly decent reproductions of art or other visual representations; it's a nice (pocket) size if you want to read it on the go -- I don't know why anyone would, however -- but big enough to be readable in an armchair. In addition, there are several symbols that I just wasn't familiar with (e.g. Eastern religious symbols), so it is educational, to an extent
On the negative side: I could have written the captions/descriptions for most of the symbols I'm familiar with, which causes me to wonder if those symbols I'm unfamiliar with bear equally trite and pedestrian explanation. Yes, I think it's common sense that monks represent piety, or that the phoenix is a symbol of resurrection and immortality. In addition, I feel that the symbols I know a good deal about aren't given the explanations they deserve; for example, Aesclepius (Greek god of healing) isn't even mentioned in the caption under "Caduceus," which has gradually come to be a symbol of the medical profession. And the prevalent Medieval/Renaissance symbol of the "memento mori" isn't even included in the book. Lastly, there are a few typographical errors that the edition's content was prepared sloppily, in general.
Overall, this edition is not worth it. If you're looking for a specific type of symbol resource, I would look into a book geared toward that field (e.g. Occult Symbology). Otherwise, Jung has several published resources you might consider (regarding Archetypes or Alchemy symbology). Go with those instead.
